Being the 3rd week of June and first day of summer break, we started our FIRST new shift-- bagging food from the USDA. It was SUPER hot and perhaps the hottest day of the week, with the temperature reaching 97 degrees Fahrenheit! 5 home club members as well as members + officers of our sponsoring Kiwanis club came out for the beginning shift. The heat was not kind! Progressing into the afternoon, it increasingly got hotter and hotter. However, lucky for us we were able to flag down the ice-cream man and get a sweet treat on our break! The items in the bags included, fresh apples, apple + tomato sauce, pasta, rice, walnuts, milk, corn flakes, apple juice + cream of mushroom. They really love their apples! Before we knew it, the pallets were close to empty and all 130 bags were filled. Onto the second shift! Unfortunately, we were short handed on this shift. But that’s okay because we expected there to be not such a huge turn out. After all, who wants to be out in this heat? More Kiwanians came and we took more bags from the food pantry out of their cars. I was sweating profusely in my mask! Shortly thereafter, the bus arrived and we loaded a few of our boxes + bags. It was nice to be in air conditioning for a while. During the actual food distribution, we weren't expecting a large turnout like they have in the past.
